The Saratoga Spa State Park Planning Study is a Scope Development Planning Study for NYSOPRHP, casting a wide net to envision a large scale understanding of Saratoga Spa State Park’s and Saratoga Performing Arts Center’s capital needs as seen through a variety of social, cultural, and economic eco-perspectives. Marvel helped determine strengths, opportunities and resources of Roosevelt Campus in the Spa Park and SPAC, to understand the overall region’s possibilities for the programming opportunities for two historic buildings in the park.

Located in the Saratoga Spa State Park, the Saratoga Performing Arts Center and other organizations underwent a planning exercise to create priorities for cultural programming in the Park.

Saratoga Spa State Park was historically established to be a place of rest and relaxation for wealthy New York City residents. The buildings were designed to support the spa functions, as well as provide educational opportunities.

Main campus objectives include connecting the Saratoga Performing Arts Center to the larger Saratoga Spa State Park campus, as well as creating a centralized mall community space.
Spa Little Theater and Admin Building Exisiting Conditions.

The effort concluded with a robust community engagement exercise to build consensus among the various groups of stakeholders, users and visitors, iterative concept designs, and a recommendation design which with an accompanying cost estimate.

The planning study for program activation of the two historic buildings in Saratoga Spa State Park included engagement with other performance arts venues in Saratoga Springs.

The final recommendation included a flexible community space, a culinary institute, a black box theater, and renovations to the theater with additional support spaces.
The program recommendations for the historic Roosevelt II building on campus presented an opportunity to incorporate a flexible performance space and a culinary teaching kitchen. To support this indoor program, the exterior courtyard is designed to be an Arts Shed.
