Marvel’s 2024 in 24 Awards
While we are well into a brand new year, at Marvel we always take the time to reflect upon the achievements our team has earned the previous year. We believe it is crucial to celebrate these recognitions whether big or small, as a way to celebrate the efforts and hard work of every talented designer at Marvel. We thank every team member, from Barcelona, New York, Richmond and San Juan, whose contributions make Marvel an award-winning design practice.

1. AIA New York Medal of Honor – MARVEL
February 14, 2024
Marvel started the year off strong with the incredible honor of receiving AIA New York’s highest distinction, the Medal of Honor. This award is presented to an architect or firm for their esteemed body of work and high professional standing. The chapter honored Marvel with the Medal of Honor at the 2024 Honors and Awards Luncheon held on April 12, 2024, an event which raised a record-breaking $405K in support of design excellence.
2. ASLA-New York Design Merit Award – Belle Isle Vision Plan
April 2, 2024
The American Society of Landscape Architects, New York (ASLA-NY) aims to boost local visibility by awarding distinguishable work of the Chapter’s membership in the practice of landscape architecture. Marvel’s Belle Isle Vision plan was recognized for its efforts in promoting and connecting the four anchor locations of the island while considering its hydrology and unique location.

3. Architizer A+ Awards: Architecture +Adaptive Reuse Special Mention – Battery Maritime Building – Casa Cipriani
April 25, 2024
Marvel’s redevelopment of this unique 1909 architectural landmark with creative adaptive reuse was acknowledged by the Architizer A+ Awards. Architizer recognizes outstanding entries such as the Battery Maritime Building as Special Mentions alongside Finalists and Winners.

4. NYCxDESIGN Finalist, Multi-Unit Housing – One Clinton
May 10, 2024
Marvel’s One Clinton is a forty story, 134-unit residential condominium at the intersection of Downtown Brooklyn and the historic Brooklyn Heights brownstone which includes a library on the ground floor and a four-story volume along Clinton Street, the building features a residential lobby, retail spaces, and a community facility.

5. NYCxDESIGN Finalist: Outdoor Space – Bronx Point
May 10, 2024
Among the finalists was also Bronx Point, a community-forward waterfront landscape surrounding a mixed-use and affordable housing development on the Harlem river.
6. AIA Regional & Urban Design Award – Snug Harbor
June 2, 2024
This award recognizes excellence in urban design, regional and city planning, and community development, highlighting architecture’s promise and true value to communities. Our design reimagines Chapel Road into a pedestrian-friendly town center with a centralized visitor hub, focusing on infrastructural improvements, enhancing visitor experience, and ensuring a sustainable future for Snug Harbor.
7. WLA Professional Awards: Conceptual – Large Landscape Design Award of Excellence – Belle Isle Vision Plan
June 11, 2024
The World Landscape Architect Awards Jury comments: “The innovative concept of the restored architecture and landscape reflects collaboration across an ecologically and culturally-driven project. Meaningful engagement and co-design and a sensitive and interesting re-use and adaptation of historic and industrial landscapes and structures to create areas with a distinctive and special character, communicated with clear and evocative graphics.”
8. CMAA New York/New Jersey Project of the Year Award – Queens Garage and Community Space
July 3, 2024
The Construction Management Association of America (CMAA) recognized Marvel’s Queens Garage in the 2024 Project of the Year Awards. The NYC Department of Design and Construction (NYCDDC) Commissioner Thomas Foley comments, “This sustainable and modern multi-use building was the first in our design-build pilot program and immediately showed the benefits of design-build over lowest bidder contracting,”

9. ARCHITECT Architecture & Interiors Awards: Merit Award – Northeast Bronx YMCA
August 5, 2024
The winners of the third year of this annual program represent a diverse range of architecture and design projects that embody innovation and ingenuity in all forms. Juror Brook Horan adds, “I felt that the YMCA was a beautiful, elegant solution to an underserved neighborhood. And it’s almost elevated to a civic building like a library or a museum.”

10. MASterworks Award: Best New Urban Amenity – Bronx Point
August 12, 2024
Best New Urban Amenity is awarded to a project whose addition to the built environment contributes to a more livable city. Through Bronx Point, MASterworks recognizes the team’s efforts in making the waterfront more accessible to underserved communities.

11. The Chicago Athenaeum International Architecture Awards: Honorable Mention – One Clinton
August 16, 2024
One Clinton was internationally recognized for its design at the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design’s International Architecture Awards. The minimalist façade, clad in limestone and bronze, mirrors New York City’s diverse scales and user types, while the unique triangular footprint of the building lends it a distinct shape.

12. AIA Puerto Rico Design Awards: Excellence for Built Work Honorable Mention – Masters Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center
October 28, 2024
The jury determined that the Masters Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center was “a good adaptation to the existing space, considering modernity while maintaining a timeless design that allows other buildings to be seen, harmoniously integrating with the exterior materials and the campus landscape.”

13. PDC Design Excellence Award – Walter Gladwin Recreation Center
October 30, 2024
The New York City Public Design Commission (PDC) Design Excellence Award acknowledges the Walter Gladwin Center as an outstanding project that “showcases the city’s commitment to innovative, sustainable, and community-centered design.”

14. Golden Hammer Awards: Best Placemaking/Arts + Culture Shortlisted – Studio Two Three
October 30, 2024
Marvel collaborated with Studio Two Three, a non-profit community arts organization, to transform their building into a multifunctional space for studio arts, events, and commercial use. Marvel considered the organization’s ethos and history in the interior design, incorporating vibrant colors and finishes.
15. Golden Hammer Awards: Best Placemaking & Urban Design Shortlisted – Belle Isle Vision Plan
October 30, 2024
Marvel is credited for developing a plan to improve accessibility and visitor amenities while preserving its identity as a beloved patch of wild nature in the middle of a bustling city. The team’s efforts in conserving native species and habitats, as well as rehabilitating defunct structures for public use is also highlighted.

16. The Chicago Athenaeum American Architecture Award – One Clinton
November 8, 2024
The Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design’s American Architecture Awards honors One Clinton as a success of a deeply collaborative public/private partnership, including the developer and their investors, Marvel, the NYC Economic Development Corporation, the Brooklyn Public Library, the NYC Department of Education, and the NYC HPD. The community was also represented by local advocates during various community engagement events.

17. The Chicago Athenaeum American Architecture Awards: Honorable Mention – Masters Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center
November 15, 2024
The Masters Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center (IEC) were among those mentioned, recognized for its architectural design that seamlessly blends contemporary elements with historic campus language while considering the school’s prevailing curriculum, the ‘Harkness’ method.
18. AIA WHV Design Awards (Westchester-Hudson Valley) – Hudson Terrace
November 15, 2024
Hunter Terrace was a proposal crafted in collaboration with Washingtonville Housing Alliance and Westhab, Inc. in response to a public RFP. This initiative creates 77 units of affordable housing in the center of the Village of Mamaroneck while adding identity and activation to the informal village green that houses many of the village’s cultural and civic institutions.

19. AIA WHV Design Awards (Westchester-Hudson Valley) – Masters Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center
November 15, 2024
The Masters IEC was once again recognized for its design, aiming to create new spaces for students to learn and gather, while preserving the school’s historic roots.The building program concept is based on the Harkness teaching and learning methodology; which facilitates an open-minded environment for discussion and engagement..
20. DBIA Design-Build Project National Award of Merit – Queens Garage and Community Space
November 18, 2024
Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) comments, “The Queens Borough Hall Municipal Garage and Community Space project illustrates a carefully executed design-build approach to meet a community’s multifaceted needs. The project became an integral early works project as part of New York City’s Borough-Based Jails (BBJ) Program.”
21. ASHE NY 2024-2025 Project of the Year Award for Small Projects under $40M– CB-30 – Design-Build Rehabilitation of the MTA B&T Rockaway Bridges
December 4, 2024
As design consultants, Marvel composed a Visual Quality Plan to achieve a harmonious design solution for the shared use path project as well as provided landscape design services. We were part of a talented interdisciplinary team of builders, engineers, surveyors, architects, and visual representation artists.

22. Tri-State Honor Award – Battery Maritime Building – Casa Cipriani
December 9, 2024
The Tri-State awards allowed firms to compete regionally, in which Marvel was recognized for the thoughtful preservation of the Battery Maritime building. The historic landmark was successfully reactivated and continues ferry operations to this day, while also housing a luxury multi-use event and hospitality venue.

23. Interior Design Best of Year Honoree: Outdoor Space – Bronx Point
December 14, 2024
Best of Year honors the most innovative projects and products in architecture, interior design, and manufacturing. Bronx Point stood out as a truly groundbreaking outdoor space, with a focus on community engagement to develop an interactive and resilient space for Bronx communities.

24. AIA New York State 2024 Design Award: Adaptive Reuse/Historic Preservation – Battery Maritime Building – Casa Cipriani
January 17, 2025
Since 1968, the AIANYS Design Awards have recognized outstanding architectural projects, among them Marvel’s preservation of the iconic Battery Maritime Building. This award acknowledges our commitment to blending design, function, and adaptive reuse, to create a modern, functional space.

Welcoming 2025
We anticipate both challenges and opportunities this new year as we face new goals, new projects, and new communities. Marvel as a practice welcomes these obstacles as we continue to grow as a firm and as designers. Our continued goal of fostering positive change remains, and we hope our work will reflect that as we progress in 2025.
