Lyric Theatre

Fast track to a more intimate theater experience

Marvel and our project team transformed the Lyric Theatre during a uniquely intense and collaborative 10 months sprint. Prior to renovation, the Lyric was an exceptionally large auditorium constructed in the 1990s with historic aspects from two older Broadway venues. Our team erected a new theater within the existing with the goal of heightening the sense of intimacy between the actors and audience. New interior columns, walls, boxes, and ceilings refine the auditorium space while reshaping of the balcony brings the audience closer to the stage. Lighting, finishes, and mechanical systems were upgraded in support of the transformation. The Lyric Theatre reopened in the spring of 2018, premiering the North American production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

According to Harry Potter Theatrical Productions, the shape of the stage had to be significantly altered to create “a bespoke home that will be intimate enough for a drama.”

The scope is a total bespoke reinvention of the auditorium interiors including new interior partitions and ceilings and structural columns with modifications to the existing balconies and boxes and upgrades to the mechanical systems. The aesthetic was a collaboration with the production set designers.

Details and documentation of custom plaster elements, finishes, and lighting contribute to a memorably immersive theatrical experience, the result of close collaboration with the production’s set designers.
