Sophie Maffie

Landscape Architectural Designer

Sophie Maffie is a 2024 MLA graduate of the University of Virginia, where she was honored as a Howland Fellow and A-School Foundation Board Fellow. With an interdisciplinary background in Geology and Latin American Studies, Sophie explores the intersection of social equity, geomorphology, and the built environment. During her time at UVA, she engaged in research projects that deepened her understanding of how vernacular landscapes and geological processes can inform sustainable design practices. Since joining Marvel, Sophie has contributed to several projects, including East Green at the Science Museum of Virginia, Dock Street Park, and Mayo Island Park.

Her diverse experiences—having lived in Washington DC, Bolivia, and Nebraska—enrich her perspective and fuel her passion for creating resilient, equitable spaces. Her blend of scientific inquiry, cultural insight, and creative energy positions her to contribute thoughtfully to the evolving conversation around the built environment and social justice.
