Mayo Island Natural Area
A future nature destination in the James River Park System.
Located where the fall zone and tidewater sections of the James River meet, Mayo Island connects the north and south sides of Richmond, Virginia. The project sits between other riverfront parks—Belle Isle, Brown’s Island, and Dock Street Park—aiming to increase riverfront access and transform the island from a parking lot into a park for recreation. It will enhance flood mitigation through improved permeability, including paving, planting, and topographical changes, and contribute to habitat restoration in this crucial ecological sector. Critical to the Mayo Island Park design will be the protection of a mature riverine edge woodland ecology for the continuation of a vibrant and robust wildlife habitat and erosion control of Mayo Island.
It’s a place to kind of watch a new ecology emerge, an island that really no one has been able to experience for many, many years.”
Tyler Silvestro, Partner at Marvel for the Richmonder.
An open house was held at the Marvel office in early 2025 to gather input from community members. The primary goal was to answer one question: "What would you like to have in the future park?"
The objective is to create a beautiful and accessible space motivated by community feedback, starting with the restoration of the natural environment of the island.

The proposed program is based on the engagement feedback, which emphasized protecting the sensitive ecology of the island, providing connected and accessible spaces, and illuminating the history of the park.

Our objective is to create a beautiful and accessible space motivated by community feedback, starting with the restoration of the natural environment of the island.
The planting is a major focus of the new Mayo Island plan, which parkgoers will be able to enjoy walking along gravel paths.
