Bank Street College of Education
Marvel was selected by Bank Street College of Education to renovate portions of their ten story facility on W 112th on Manhattan's Upper West Side. The College embarked on the renovation as a multiphased project spanning numerous floors of the existing building in an effort to expand their School For Children (Grades K-8).
Marvel provided a cost
effective renovation for
the first through fourth grade
classrooms by
reconfiguring existing
classroom layouts and
providing new furniture,
finishes, and equipment.
Corridor niches within the
gut renovated expansion
floor provide flexible
spaces for one-on-one
instruction, independent
study, and break-out
spaces for student teams.
Student workspaces
surround the classroom's
meeting space, a central
part of Bank Street's
teaching approach.
Fifth grade students work
in small teams in a
classroom on the
expansion floor.
Fourth grade students
sit at a variety of
learning spaces while
their teacher instructs in
front of a large
smartboard.
A new fifth grade
classroom on the
expansion floor has
multiple learning zones:
team meeting space in
the far left, group desks
on the right, and a
multi-disciplinary
class-wide project on
China in the near left.
Fifth grade students
collaborate on a map of
China, part of their
multi-displinary
class-wide project.
Eighth grade students
within one of the two
foreign language
classrooms on the
renovated classroom
floor.
Bank Street's school color
highlights a student
artwork display directly
across from the main stair
and elevators as well as
highlights break-out
seating at niches along
the new expansion floor's
main corridor.
A lounge space on the
administration and faculty
office floor provides a
space for visitors, staff,
and students to connect.
The classroom layouts
maximize daylighting in
all learning zones within
the new expansion floor
classrooms.
Glass partitions in an
efficient layout for Bank
Street's president's suite
creates an open and
inviting environment while
still providing privacy.
