State Street Townhouses
Respectful dialogue between old and new.
State Street Townhouses are 23 single family homes that make up the first full block of townhouses that has been built in Brooklyn in over a century. Marvel’s design takes design cues from the historic National Register houses near the Site, providing a visually compelling street-front while reconnecting the site to its nearby brownstone neighbors. The townhouses have been widely recognized for elegantly reinterpreting modern living within this historic typology. According to Architectural Record, “individually, the 14 Townhouses are a modern interpretation of the classic townhouse [...] [T]hey establish a unified aesthetic using a playful composition varied to create subtle and distinct differences...”
No two houses look alike, and a one-three, one-three rhythm playfully extends throughout the 28 contiguous facades.
Subtle changes in plane and material create depth and variety along a unified street front.
